Glencoe and Hokes Bluff are scenic small cities nestled in the Appalachian Mountain foothills to the east and southeast of Gadsden in Alabama’s Calhoun and Etowah counties. As well as being close to Gadsden, these communities are within two hours’ drive of Atlanta. Both Glencoe and Hokes Bluff boast some of northeast Alabama’s most beautiful scenery and finest recreational amenities, including the exceptional Silver Lakes Golf Course on the famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
Glencoe and Hokes Bluff rank high among Alabama’s fastest-growing communities. Both feature many newer residential subdivisions with spacious, contemporary single-family homes.

Glencoe and Hokes Bluff offer a relaxed suburban atmosphere with a good choice of local restaurants and plenty of outdoor recreation. Hokes Bluff was named for its position atop a bluff overlooking the Coosa River. The area offers scenic parks with boat ramps on the riverfront along with unique attractions such as Glencoe’s Dive Land Park.

Glencoe offers a diverse choice of local restaurants clustered along the main thoroughfare of East Meighan Boulevard. Tre Ragazzi’s Italian Café
is a local favorite that has several locations around the area and serves both traditional and inventive takes on Italian pizzas, calzones, pasta dishes, and subs. The menu also includes decadent desserts, including cannolis, tiramisu and limoncello mascarpone cake.
Big Chief Drive-In
is a classic mom ‘n’ pop stop-off for old-fashioned hamburgers and milkshakes. Menu highlights include signature Big Chief grape soft serve ice cream. For flavorful Mexican fare, Mi Casita
offers an eclectic menu of burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos and fajitas. There are also build-your-own platters and an abundance of vegetarian options.
In the picturesque Appalachian Mountain foothills rising to the south of Hokes Bluff, Maraella Vineyards & Winery
is a must-visit for wine lovers. Maraella’s flagship cabernet sauvignon and Carlos dry white muscadine have both won gold and silver medals at numerous wine competitions in Alabama and California. Maraella Vineyards is open for public wine tastings on Thursday through Sunday, and private tastings are available to book throughout the rest of the week.
Things to Do
The Links at Briarmeade
is a public golf course in the heart of Glencoe that offers challenging holes with deceptively quick greens. This 18-hole course was designed in two phases between the 1930s and ‘50s by founder George Black. Black modeled the course after the traditional links courses of his native Scotland. Numerous tournaments and social events are held at The Links at Briarmeade throughout the year.
Located just south of Glencoe, Silver Lakes Golf Course
is one of the standout courses on Alabama’s famous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Silver Lakes has 36 holes of golf spread across a gorgeous Appalachian foothills landscape featuring forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
Glencoe’s Dive Land Park
is a unique destination offering certified divers and snorkelers the chance to explore clear waters inside a repurposed quarry. Between May and October, Dive Land Park hosts a monthly night dive every third Saturday. Non-divers can also enjoy the night dive’s accompanying live music entertainment and overnight camping. Hokes Bluff Sports Complex
provides a variety of sports facilities in the heart of Hokes Bluff. Here you’ll find fields for baseball and soccer alongside a community swimming pool.
covers eight scenic acres on Hokes Bluff’s Coosa River waterfront. Amenities and attractions at Ferry Park include a picnic pavilion, nature trails, and a dock and boat ramp for enjoying activities on the river. In September, Hokes Bluff CityFest
attracts thousands of attendees with live music and entertainment, rides for kids and adults, arts and crafts exhibitors, and food booths.
Glencoe and Hokes Bluff are served by the Etowah County school district.
